In the Garden

Watercolor, ink and mixed media on paper

Inspired by the archetypal “heroine’s journey” inward to the self and the changes that parenthood brings, In the Garden evokes a dark whimsy. A figure sits among the dreamy floral landscape dripping with jewels, enticing them to linger. The warm colors of the figure stand in a precarious balance with the cool surroundings, as if this visitor is caught between worlds, reflecting on themself. How long can you wander in a dream before getting lost?

Ekaterina Orlovie is a Russian-born artist living and working in Riverside. She renders fairytale botanicals, illustrative figures and landmarks, and found objects with carefully selected color palettes and textures in watercolor and digitally. She layers florals and found objects to create an imaginary world where perfection and disruption coexist, intertwining worries about motherhood with universal themes from childhood stories. In her meticulously planned work, our subconscious can fully rest and play without fear of judgment. Having graduated in 2012 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA) from the University of Oregon, she is now a member of both Eastside Arthouse and volunteers for The Artlands, organizing local gallery shows and promoting art for the public. She is involved in community projects including a recent mural for Beautify Riverside.
